I yderkanten af galaksen har den eftersøgte Richard B. Riddick i 5 år haft held med at narre dusørjægere og lejesoldater. Nu er han imidlertid fanget på planeten Helion, hvor et højt civiliseret, multikulturelt samfund er undertvunget af Lord Marshal - en despot, der regerer jernhårdt ved hjælp af sin hær af frygtindgydende necromongers.

Det lykkes Riddick at flygte fra et underjordisk fængsel, hvor temperaturerne svinger fra arktiske nætter til stegende hede dage, men han havner på necromongernes moderskib, hvor han møder Lord Marshal i en dommedags-duel, der måske vil afgøre alle væseners skæbne - både levende og døde.
